Arbor Day Celebration – Boyne City’s Veterans Park Pavilion

The FoBR and the Boyne Valley Garden Club are giving away red maple, white oak, gray birch and tulip tree seedlings, and the City is giving away red & white pine and blue & Norway spruce seed-lings. Many vendors and activities are planned.

Counting Critters
Shelby Adams, Michigan DNR Pigeon River Country
To successfully manage wildlife in the Pigeon River Country, wildlife biologists in Michigan survey large and small species – from elk and wolves to Kirtland’s Warblers. We’ll learn how the data is collected and then used to expertly manage wildlife diversity.  

Saturday, May 11th
Join the STREAM TEAM volunteer river monitors, 9am-noon.
The presence or absence of pollution-sensitive “water bugs” indicates river health.

CRA and River Restoration
Kim Balke, Program Director, Conservation Resource Alliance
For more than a century, CRA has been at the forefront of initiatives that enhance Michigan’s natural wonders. Kim will highlight river projects— restoring waterways, reducing erosion, and enhancing instream habitat for aquatic species.

Tuesday, June 18th
“Spruce Up” at Boyne River Nature Area and rain garden. Bring garden tools to mulch memorial trees, pull weeds, weed whip and plant flowers in preparation for summer visitors. 10am-noon followed by a hot dog lunch. Located in the Boyne City Business Park off M-75 S.

Annual Membership meeting, Veterans Park Pavilion, Boyne City.
The pavilion is a busy place—note the new date.

Boyne River Sweep, 9am-noon. Veterans Park boat launch.
Bring a kayak to paddle from Dam Rd., or walk streambanks. 

Saturday, September 7th

Healing Waters – A History of the Boyne River
Patrick McCleary, Boyne Heritage Center 
The Boyne River was named for Ireland’s River Boyne, and there are other notable river details we may not know. Patrick will share historic photos and tell us how early pioneers envisioned use of the falls, how the power plant affected the river, the story behind moving the river mouth, and more.

Making Sure Midwest National Parks Thrive for the Next 100 Years
Kira Davis, Great Lakes Senior Program Manager, National Parks Conservation Association
Since 1919, the non-profit NPCA has been the leading voice in safeguarding our national parks. From the newly opened Michigan office, Kira spearheads work to protect and enhance the Great Lakes Region parks, including Sleeping Bear Dunes, Isle Royale, and Pictured Rocks with a focus on protecting national park waters, wildlife and landscapes. She will tell us the about NPCA’s great lakes and midwest campaigns, and status of the Great Lakes national parks—from visitors’ experiences to the health of the land and waters.
